EnviroMatrix (Pty) Ltd is a B-BBEE accredited company that was established in 2013 to provide consultation services in environmental management. Services include applications for Environmental Authorisations, waste management licenses, mining permits, and water use licensing, as well as specialist environmental services such as GPS mapping of agricultural fields, wetland delineation, and geohydrological assessment with input from freelance specialists. EnviroMatrix is the result of nearly two decades of consultancy work by Tom Hugo, the director, as an independent contractor, business partner, or environmental consultant in the national and international environment. As time passed, several more specialists from different fields of science joined the team, thereby allowing EnviroMatrix to grow to where it is today.
EnviroMatrix GIS, a BEE accredited Level 2 company with 51% historically disadvantaged ownership, was launched in 2021 to serve as a more specialized division. It caters for health and safety management, environmental monitoring during construction, and reporting. This allows EnviroMatrix to focus exclusively on its environmental management aspects and specialist services. Clients of EnviroMatrix and EnviroMatrix GIS include governmental departments and parastatals, local municipalities, engineering companies, commercial farmers and cooperatives, chemical bulk storage, as well as leisure and residential developments
Mr Tom Hugo received his Master’s Degree in Environmental Management at the University of the Free State in 2006 after 20 years in the conservation industry. He has 10 years’ experience in environmental management ranging from on-site environmental monitoring to various environmental impact assessments. He is a registered Professional Ecological & Environmental Scientist (SACNASP No. 400124/96) and a registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAPASA No. 2019/2013). He holds membership with the International Association for Impact Assessment South Africa (IAIAsa No. 3781),the South African Wildlife Management Association, as well as the Game Rangers Association of South Africa.
Mr Hilton Maasdorp is a qualified Occupational Health and Safety manager with 8 years of experience. His contribution to projects includes the compilation of safety files and plans in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Standards (OHSAS 18001 & 45001) and Evacuation Plans. He also has experience as an on-site safety consultant which involves auditing, reporting, induction training, conducting risk assessments, identifying hazards, developing mitigation measures, and implementing risk managing processes. He is a registered Professional Occupational Health and Safety Member with the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh No. 60644137) and is currently in the process of registering as a Construction Health and Safety Manager at the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions.
Ms Janette van der Walt received her B.Eng Chemical Engineering Degree at the North-West University in 1992. During her tenure at SASOL as process engineer and project health, safety and environmental manager she studied a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science. After obtaining her Master’s in 1999 again from North-West University she worked as a project coordinator in the environmental management field and has experience in bankable social and environmental impact assessments. She also has experience in the application for Environmental Authorisations, Mining Permits and Water Use Licenses in the South African context. She is an active member of the International Association of Impact Assessment South Africa (IAIAsa No. 6123) and a Registered EAP with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA No. 2020-3033).
Ms Elizmarie Bester received her Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences in 2017 from the North-West University. After spending two years abroad, she returned to further her science career in South Africa. She has experience in environmental impact assessments, freshwater ecology identification, environmental construction monitoring, geographical information systems (GIS), and environmental legislation which includes water use license applications and environmental authorisations. She is a registered Professional Natural Scientist (SACNASP No. 135627) and Registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAPASA No. 2020/2575). She also holds membership with the International Association for Impact Assessment South Africa (IAIAsa No. 6450).
Mr Janus Botha received his BSc. Degree in Environmental and Biological Sciences at the North-West University in 2017. He joined EnviroMatrix in January 2022 and has experience in compiling screening tool reports, conducting environmental impact assessments, and designing geographical information system (GIS). He also has experience in the application for Environmental Authorisations and Mining Permits. He is a registered Candidate Natural Scientist (SACNASP No. 151727) and a Registered Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAPASA No. 2022/5280). He also holds membership with the International Association for Impact Assessment South Africa (IAIAsa No. 6936).
Ms Ntebaleng Mofokeng received her BSc in Applied Geology at the University of the Western Cape in 2023. She joined EnviroMatrix in March 2024 and has thus gained experience in compiling screening tool reports, basic assessment reports, geographical information systems (GIS). She also has experience in application for Environmental Authorisations and Mining Permits. She is a registered Candidate Natural Scientist (SACNASP No. 170446)
